We all know her – Carrie Bradshaw with her fabulous style and that famous closet. Level with me here, regardless of if you loved or loathed her outfits, she has become a fashion icon. An icon that tried almost any look (many she pulled off) and defined a style era. She is a symbol of fashion bravery providing inspiration to us all. Without her, we may not be as gutsy with our own fashion choices.
Which brings to me to why we are all here today – the ‘Carrie Bradshaw cape’.
I typically like to think of myself as a risk taker when it comes to fashion. Over the years I’ve been known to wear some unique pieces – a beret, the ‘heart of the ocean’ necklace, mickey mouse pants, a purple pleather shiny jacket. And I once went through a phase where I wore a tie dye shirt and woven vest all.the.time. Oh, and let’s not forget the red skirt that closely resembled a Ringling Brothers costume. Fashion is fun for me and I love incorporating new pieces in to my wardrobe. That’s why I’m always on the lookout for cute, affordable clothes to add to my ever evolving closet.
A few weeks ago my friend Audrey from Seahorse Lane Boutique asked me to walk in her fashion show at the Wine, Women, and Shoes fundraiser. My favorite look from the night? This fabulous dress and cape combo! Perfect for a night out on the town (martini’s with the girls?) or a day at the office.
I was a little nervous at first because I’ve never worn a cape, but the instant I put it on I felt elegant. The neutral brown dress is great for fall and that white cape? It’s simply timeless.
A cape has holes for your arms and can be worn in replacement of a coat or blazer. It’s unique structure is perfect for layering over t-shirts, blouses, or dresses. Have some fun with your styling – dress it up, dress it down. It really is a piece that can go with so many items in your closet. Don’t be afraid to pair it with patterns (a stripe shirt or a patterned skirt) or experiment pairing it with color – rust is popular for the fall season.
